Discovery Bay is a town in Saint Ann Parish on the northern coast of Jamaica.  There is a dispute as to whether Christopher Columbus first landed in Discovery Bay in 1494 though others say it was at Rio Bueno. The town itself  8 km west of Runaway Bay and 8 km east of Rio Bueno has only marginal appeal. Discovery Bay’s economy is dependent upon tourism and bauxite mining, dominating by the Kaiser Bauxite Company’s Port Rhoades bauxite-loading facilities. Large freighters are fed by conveyor belts from a huge storage dome that looks like a rusty pumpkin. You can follow the road signed ‘Port Rhoades’ uphill 1km to a lookout point offering fantastic views over the bay.
